    Team,

Is there consideration on how to agree on accepting methods to verify ingredients when NSF does not have a standard defined or method for testing.

In both products our company submitted – we failed the initial testing:  One for NSF not being able to test Lemongrass Oil and unwilling to take supply chain paperwork alone; Second for testing Shea Butter (an ingredient – one that is well known) testing that the material was not present (using an inappropriate test)

The issue being that in both cases a failure notice was issued to the manufacturer (me) – and the topic debated.  Implying we would not get certified.   It put the burden on the manufacturer to introduce a proper test methodology to NSF for testing the ingredient presence, %, and purity.   Resulting in a significant delay in the testing given the iterative approach, having to get back in to the test que et al.... and Shea Butter / Essential Oils are prevalent in topical personal care products.  NSF experience is in Supplements testing – so there is a gap here

There should be a method defined for those substances/ingredients – that enables NSF to develop a data base on the test methods for ingredients from their manufacturers of ISO processes – that do not delay product testing / cert months.

    Rachel/Natalie

I have reviewed the draft and I have only one comment.  I am still concerned about stability testing.  I note that a scientifically sound protocol or plan must be submitted with the initial application and I'm very happy with that.  I am concerned that the applicant is not required to begin executing the plan for two years, which means that data may only become available in the third year of a product being on the market.

I realize that we discussed this more than once.

If we had the debate, and I am in a minority of one, then I don't want to withhold my endorsement for the document as a whole.  Is there/what is a process for last minute resolution of outstanding concerns?

    Thank you

    Geoff

    Hi Geoff,

Thank you for weighing in!  The goal with extending out the time to complete stability was primarily to defray costs for those that didn't already have data. While we did discuss this in committee no one expressed strong opinions in regard to when the stability protocol is required to be started.  That being said, we have some other comments that require edits so this is great timing.  Can you vote for the standard as written and submit your comment so we can "officially" record and respond?

Is starting the protocol by the time of the first annual review an acceptable edit?  This was the other timeline that was discussed.

Thank you, clearly I didn't express my view strongly enough , but yes I would accept starting to execute the protocol before the first annual renewal.

    Thank you
