Subject : Important aspect of POE systems not addressed Category : Substantive Comment There is one very important aspect for granular carbon beds in POE systems that should be mentioned. That is that if the full size unit has backwashing, then the full scale test and any scale up test must include backwashing in the testing regime. Backwashing can upset the carbon bed and relocate carbon particulate within the bed, so that carbon that is saturated with a contaminant may migrate closer to the outlet of the device and result in the passage of contaminant. This function, if available in the full size unit, must be addressed and included in both the full scale and scale up testing. Proposal If a product has a backwashing function or other function that may disrupt the media bed in the product, the test must include this function in the most conservative (most disruptive) manufacturer's setting at a minimum of twice during testing: Immediately prior to the 50% and 100% sample points for products tested to 100% of capacity. Immediately prior to the 50% and 120% sample points for products tested to 120% of capacity Immediately prior to the 100% and 200% sample points for products tested to 200% of capacity. The function may be performed more often as recommended in the manufacturer's user manual or other consumer supplied documentation.
