    Hello Everyone,

Thank you to those who voted on the recent ballot to determine if NSF/ANSI 498 would stay a sustainability standard or not. The ballot passed with 10 affirmative, 0 negative, and 2 abstentions. As I stated in the last meeting this does not mean that the standard will remain as it is written, in fact I can tell you that it will not remain as it is currently written. I am going to open a straw ballot to collect comments on this standard. I know that we had some comments turned in through the ACA Task Force but I would like to start fresh and have the comments turned in on the provided comment template. Please note the different columns on the template. The first column is for your name. The second is for the clause. Please be specific here and not just section 13 but section 13.1.2 (example numbers). The third may not need to be filled out. This is to specifically state a figure or table number. It can also be used to help narrow down a paragraph if section 13.1.2 is a long, multi-paragraph section. The fourth column is for the type of comment. Is your comment a general (ge) comment, technical (te) comment, or editorial (ed)?

The comment column is where you will make your justification for your change. Give as much data driven justification as possible. The proposed change column is where you will show what you want the text to be changed to. Please do not put "re-write" or "make more clear". If you are suggesting a change you need to give the group a starting point for discussion. Please also use the ANSI format for editing which is that you will put the text as it is currently written in the standard. You will then use strikethrough to indicate any text you are suggesting to remove and highlight in grey any text that you are suggesting to add. This ensures that the JC members are able to see the original text and see how you are suggesting to change it. The absurd example below shows that someone is suggesting to delete 'architectural coating' and add in 'painting'. If you have questions on this I would be more than happy to set up a call with any of you.

    1.2     Scope

This standard is intended to enable organizations throughout the architectural coating painting supply chain to apply product performance requirements to achieve sustainable attributes and demonstrate compliance with levels of achievement through quantifiable metrics. The standard is inclusive, is based on product life cycle assessment (LCA) principles and provides benchmarks for continuous improvement and innovation.

Lastly, we will not accept sweeping suggestions things such as 'delete all section 3'. If you feel that a requirement should be deleted please be specific and state for example 'delete 3.26' and you must provide data for your justification. The final column is what we will use to record the JC's discussion and resolution of the suggestion.

As it was suggested at the last meeting, we would like to host a 2-3 day in person meeting to get through all of these comments so we can publish. I will work with ACA to determine if this will be hosted at NSF or at ACA. This standard has been worked on and discussed for years and passed the JC ballot back in 2023 so we do not want to delay it any longer than it needs to be. Please let me know if you have any questions.

    Best,

    Rachel
