Purpose
The purpose of this ballot is to present two options of language revision regarding the validation of the Secondary Inflow Method in NSF/ANSI Standard 49.
Background
Issue paper BSC-2023-01 – Secondary Inflow Method highlighted the long tested fact that very rarely and likely coincidentally does the data gathered using the secondary inflow method match that of the primary method. Nevertheless, as pointed out by the issue proponent, Standard 49 requires that a successful reproduction of the method shall take place prior to certification.
The Original Issue Paper was submitted January 31, 2023 and the proposed language was sent directly to JC Approval Ballot. This ballot received a number of negative comments soon after the ballot opened and based on the initial feedback, the issue proponent decided to replace the first issue paper (2023-01) with a new issue paper (2023-02). The critical ask of this second issue paper was the creation of a Task Group (TG), and this TG has now met twice to discuss various options moving forward.
After substantial discussion during the latest teleconference (April 10, 2023), the issue proponent agreed to write up new language capturing the spirit of the discussion which is referenced on this straw ballot as “Option 1”. After creation of this language, and further discussion outside the meeting, the issue proponent reconsidered the approach and decided the whole concept of validation may well be abandoned instead of defined, which is referenced on this straw ballot as “Option 2”.
The intended result of this straw ballot is as much about which approach to take, as the language itself, and will likely require further discussion. As such, the choices here include:
1) Yes to one of the options,
2) Yes to both of the options, or
3) No to both of the options.
