The proposal is based on EFSA opinion and is probably outside the scope of the NSF/ANSI 173 standard. It was developed from a review of caffeine studies and potential health effects that showed that moderate daily caffeine intake at dose levels of 400 mg/day is not uncommon and is also not associated with any adverse effects. This standard is opposed because in the US for food FDA has not set a limit on caffeine other than cola type beverages. The proposed limit is also not consistent for caffeine limits for OTC drugs. CRN and AHPA?s guidelines on labeling for caffeine containing dietary supplements and foods recognize no such limit, and the establishment of one gives the appearance that the level of caffeine intake from a single product or multiple products is unsafe.
